Stroll through the alleys of old Wissembourg, a once powerful and prosperous town. A walk for the whole family!
The construction in the 7th century of the Abbey Church Saints Peter and Paul allowed the birth and prosperity of Wissembourg. To defend itself, the city was surrounded by fortifications and 4 castles. Today, the fortifications as well as many old buildings are still visible in the city.

Description

From the car park, go to Rue du Nord.

Take a right onto the national street and then continue left into Rue de la République. Then turn right into the pedestrian lane to take a right onto the Teutonic Order Street. Turn left to pass the Château Stanislas, then right in the chapter street to pass the Abbey St. Peter and Paul.
Take right on the platform of 24 November then cross the bridge on the left and continue to the Church Saint-Jean. Take a right just before the church and continue on Saint-Jean Street. Take a right on rue de l'étoile and then catch the cross street on the left. Cross the wool street to continue the circuit through the street of the chain and return to the car park.

    Saint Pierre and Paul Abbey

    Founded around 660, Benedictine from 750 to its apogee, from the 10th to the 16th century, it has been Catholic since 1803. The building is predominantly Gothic and dates from the 13th-14th century, except for the monolithic bell tower to the west, only remnant of the Romanesque church of the 11th century. It is famous for its cloister, yet unfinished, where we can see the funerary slabs of the abbots dating from the 14th and 15th century, and for its 14th century stained glass windows.
  • Castle-church-abbey

    Church of Saint Jean

    Built at the end of the 13th century in a late Romanesque style, it was later modified before being severely damaged in January 1945. The organ, dating from 1720, was also destroyed. Wall paintings dating from the construction of the church and restored in 1990 can still be admired on its walls.

Access and parking

From Haguenau, take the D263 towards Wissembourg, then turn left to catch the D3.
